The City at Our Feet

Our journey will take us through parts of London, known as the ‘City’. It is one of the world’s most important financial areas.

During our journey we are going to record information in this Workbook that we are then going to use back at School.

One key idea for our day’s work is to get a feeling for the buildings of the area. We need to ask questions such as:

·       What do they look like?

·       How big are they?

·       In what ways are they similar or different?

·       What are they made of?

·       What is their purpose?

·       Is this the kind of place in which you might like to work?

One of the reasons for this is that when we get back to school we are going to imagine the future and make models for a building.

Your Workbook contains a number of activities for you to carry out with the help of your teacher. Record your findings as carefully and as clearly as possible.

Don’t forget you are a representative of your School, so be on best behaviour at all times. Streets can be dangerous with traffic, so at all times be careful and alert. Also be mindful of other pedestrians and people going about their work. Always stay with your group and teacher.

Enjoy your day - and work hard

Activity: Taking Photographs

Each group has a camera with 27 exposures. During our Trail your group has to take photos that will help you to remember what you have seen once you get back to School. You will need to take it in turns to take the pictures. Your teacher will stop you in a number of places to allow you to take the photos.

Each time we stop to take the photos we will mark on our map where we are standing. We can use a code, like P1, P2, P3 etc each time we stop.

You will need your photos to help you with ideas for making models when you return to School. Use the camera to record ‘the City’.

Activity:  Using Photographs

Activity: Imagining the Future

On these next pages are 5 photos taken along our Trail in Old Broad Street. These show construction activities for the building of a new addition to the ‘city’.

WHAT MIGHT THIS BUILDING LOOK LIKE?

When you are back at school you will begin to work on ideas and making models for what you feel a building for this site might look like.

Our work on our trail should give you plenty of ideas.

Look at the photos, look at the building site and share ideas of what you think the new building might look like. Write down your ideas in the spaces provided. Think about size, shape, materials, windows and entrances especially.

How big? How tall? How many floors?

What materials?

What would the windows be like?

Which colours?

What would the entrance be like?
