Building Experiences
Buckinghamshire Education Business Partnership
Teacher Training & Workshop Programme in Primary
Schools
The Education Business Partnership engaged Building Experiences to work in
20 of its Primary Schools, to deliver Workshops. Schools were able to choose
from either a Structures or Model Making Workshop. 600 pupils, age-range
8-11 years, took part in the programme.
Running concurrently with the School’s Programme were twilight
Training Workshops for 50 teachers in Model Making. Funding was
obtained to provide each teacher with a Model Making Kit, developed
by Building Experiences, consisting of materials that can be used
year on year, and commonly used and easily replaced consumables.

How easily can the Workshop be incorporated into your teaching programme?
-
Not easily as we haven’t as yet begun
the QCA unit on “shelters”, but raring to go in
the Autumn Term
-
Hopefully easily with alterations to time constraints
and passing on info to staff
-
Fits in exactly with post SATS planning
-
It would be a useful addition to the QCA technology
units for Yr6 children after their SATS
-
Very easily
-
D.T. – Shelters
-
Very well – especially after SATS!
-
Very easily into Yr 6 QCA unit on Shelters
-
Quite easily with a bit of modification
-
Depends what we leave out instead!
-
With Y6 pupils it should be easy
-
Very easily
-
Would use as a one of session as this is the
end of the year but would incorporate into QCA Tech. Project
Shelters
-
As part of “QCA Structures” quite
easily
-
Very easily for a short 4-5 week programme
-
Very well
What impact do you think this practical approach will have on your pupils?
-
Really fun way to learn about model-making
-
Very positive – will bring a lot of enjoyment
and satisfaction. Gives the less academic but practical child
a chance to shine
-
I will introduce them to the idea of being
able to design buildings and will broaden the range of materials
they work for
-
Rethink ‘scale’. Good impact
-
Working in a situation where children have
had little opportunity to do practical activities this will
be a great way into technology for Yr 6
-
A big impact. Thank you
-
It will be incorporated into our D&T scheme
which supports practical problem solving
-
Team work will be good!
-
They will enjoy the challenge of design
-
An enjoyable challenge
-
Very beneficial, gives them a view of the real
world of design and architecture
-
Makes them think, work together, plan, use
tools etc
-
Help them think through stages of designing
and building
-
Much better to use a practical approach for
children this age to learn
