Building Experiences
Workshop Programme
Design a Community Centre
Size - Space - Scale
Size, space and scale are key elements in this Workshop that allows
participants to arrive at 3D models for a public building - a
Community Centre. The approaches once used can be adapted to
any real, local building that might be of interest to the School
and its curriculum. The Workshop embraces a number of National
Curriculum subjects and areas, e.g. Maths, Design & Technology,
Science, and English.
It promotes problem solving, group-work and decision-making.
Once completed, you will know how best to use and develop the
opportunities from the Workshop. The Workshop can be used at both
Primary and Lower Secondary levels.
The Workshop
Time: 2 Hours
Space Required:Classroom with desks
Other Requirements: Scissors: Glue: Coloured pens
Participants are each given one of 4 possible kits from which
to make a 3D model of a freestanding building. These vary in shape
and size – but are all to the same scale.
Through discussion they decide which they feel ‘best’ fits
the site that has been made available for a new Community Centre.
A scaled Floor-Design Layout exercise follows and allows the participants,
working in pairs, to arrive at what any Community Centre might
contain.
