Building Experiences
Workshop Programme
Building Domes
This Workshop allows pupils to construct a large dome and
so introduces them to those exciting shapes that are found
in many of our towns and cities. They have a cross-cultural
feel and they have been used as important symbols for buildings
in different parts of the world. The resulting structure will
enable the group to stand or sit beneath it and look up in
awe.
The Workshop covers aspects of National Curriculum subjects, such
as, Science, Design & Technology, Maths, English, Citizenship
and PSHE. You will know how best to use and develop opportunities
for learning, as a result of our work with you.
The ‘hands-on’ construction part of the Workshop will
occupy most of our time with you.
This approach, gives pupils opportunities in the application of
design ideas, co-operative learning, team-building and problem-solving.
The Workshop can be used with learners of all ages and abilities.
The Workshop
Time: 2 Hours
Space Required: Large Room - with headroom of 4m, or more
Other Requirement: Overhead Projector
The Workshop is introduced using a number of colour slides relating
the workshop activity to the construction of domes. This can be
followed by a simple parachute exercise, as a result of which pupils
gain an idea of what it is like to be under a ‘dome’.
Constructing The Dome commences through an exercise that results
in the construction of a tetrahedron, by each pupil. The properties
of this structure are elaborated. Working in groups, the pupils
build a pillar, using their tetrahedrons. The dome will sit upon
these pillars. A dome is constructed and is then lifted into place
to form a structure roughly 5m diameter and 4m high.
Once constructed, and whilst sitting under it discussion takes
place which covers areas such as: a recap of what we have done
and learned, together with such questions as to, How might such
a dome be decorated? and What might such a structure be used for?
We will ask you to complete an Evaluation Sheet as a result of
our work at the School. We trust that our work with you will complement
what you are already undertaking with your pupils. We hope we will
leave behind ideas upon which you can build.
