Building Experiences
Workshop Programme
Early Years Learning
Shape, Size, Space and Me
Introduction:
This Workshop has been designed for young learners of pre-school
and Key Stage 1 age. It consists of a number of related activities
that allow the participants to explore shape, size and space.
These are basic elements of our built environment. The Workshop explores perception
and our need to enclose space.
It involves hands-on making and personal evaluation with regard to space and
the individual. It is designed to cater for groups of up to 10 participants.
The Workshop:
Time: 1 Hour
Space Required: A classroom or hall
Sequence of activities:
-
Handling of a number of familiar shapes: square, triangle,
circle, semi-circle and rectangle - with different textures.
Verbal recognition, responses / reactions to likes / dislikes.
-
Relating shapes to everyday familiar objects through pictures.
-
Crocodile walk around a part of the school – where can
we see these shapes?
-
Cut and Slot – using the same shapes the children create
their own hat – ‘A roof over my head’.
-
An outline of a child horizontal and the group standing is
created on paper which allows him/her/them to consider - How
much space to enclose me / us?
-
An enclosure is created from large examples of shapes already
encountered. It is big enough to contain the whole group and
to allow them to experience the space.
-
Light and colour is used to explore their space - how can
we change the experience of the space?
