Building Experiences
Workshop Programme
Making Models
This Workshop has been developed with the assistance of Skidmore,
Owings & Merrill Inc. who are an internationally renowned architectural
practice. The Workshop gives participants the opportunity to explore
a number of approaches and materials commonly used in model
making.
The intention is that once learners have taken part in the Workshop,
they will feel more able and confident to apply the techniques
learned in their further studies and work.
Curriculum Areas include: Design & Technology / Science /
Maths / PSHE / Careers
The Workshop
Time: 2 Hours
Space Required: A classroom
Other Requirement: OHP
An introduction which, with examples, explores the need for models
in designing and changing our surroundings.
Individual Work
A series of simple activities for participants introducing the techniques of
Moulding / Laminating / Abstraction to Scale.
Group Work
Each group is given a plan of a building in outline and a quantity and variety
of materials. Together they arrive at a 3D model and representation of the
building.
Each group to report back on how they arrived at their representation
along with how their design might be improved upon.
Whole Class Work
Each group’s work is placed on a template giving a unified model for
a particular urban space.
