Building Experiences
Workshop Programme
Renovate
Renovate is a Workshop designed to allow participants to
arrive at a new use for a derelict building. It is based on a 19th
century, 5-storey factory and the aim is to bring it into the new
millennium. Participants make a scaled 3D model, decide upon a
new use, and then begin to redesign its interior. Ideas related
to sustainable development are part of the input to these deliberations.
The Workshop represents opportunities in a range of National Curriculum
subjects including Design & Technology, Maths, Science, and
English. Once completed you will know how best to use and develop
these opportunities for further learning. See the Note below.
The Workshop can be used at both Primary & Secondary levels.
The Workshop
Time: 2 or 4 Hours depending on how much follow-up time
is available
Space Required: Classroom with desks
Other Requirement: Scissors; Craft Knives; Glue
The Workshop is introduced using video film footage of the building.
Working in pairs participants construct a 3D scaled card model
from a kit.
Together they begin to discuss what the building might be used
for.
A scaled, Floor-Design Layout exercise is introduced whereby the
pairs arrive at a layout for one of the 5 floors. Depending on
time available to you, you may wish to manage the class so that
they arrive at a ‘whole building redesign’.
The Workshop ends with ideas about sustainable development and
materials.
Note: The Workshop is really designed as a starting point
for further work which can be followed-up by you whether one opts
for a two or four hour session.
