Workshop Programme

Sustainable Communities of the Future

The Workshop presents the participants with the challenge of designing a 3D housing-layout scheme of the future. It does this by introducing key ideas related to the theme of Sustainable Communities. It can be used in a number of National Curriculum contexts e.g. Design & Technology, Maths, Science, English.

The Workshop promotes problem solving, group-work and decision-making. It can be used at both Primary & Secondary levels.

Once completed, you will know how best to use and develop opportunities from the Workshop.

The Workshop

Time: 2 or 4 Hours depending on how much follow-up time is available
Space Required: Classroom with desks
Other Requirement: Scissors; Craft Knives; Glue

Participants work in small groups and are given a large-format plan of the area together with templates of roads and housing-types. The latter are made into freestanding, 3D models from which a housing layout is created.

At various times during their deliberations the participants are introduced to ideas about sustainable development. These affect and influence the nature of their designs. Eventually each group arrives at a layout that reflects the incorporation of ideas related to housing layout of the future. The layout is glued and additions in coloured pens can be made.
